Podcast #319:
Superbugs, Missing Microbes, and Antibiotic Resistance.

Dr. Martin Blaser

Guest: Dr. Martin Blaser

Today’s interview could not be more timely.

This week, an antibiotic-resistant “nightmare bacteria” was connected to two patient deaths at a UCLA Medical Center.

As reported by CNN, the bacteria known as CRE proves fatal for half of those infected. At last count, 179 patients may have been exposed to the contaminated endoscopes said to be the source of the UCLA outbreak. So far, seven infections have been reported.

Unfortunately, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are become increasingly common. According to today’s podcast guest Dr. Martin Blaser, author of Missing Microbes, the overuse of antibiotics is largely to blame.

Podcast 227: How to Clear Up Brain Fog!

BrainBookCVR-199x300by Sean Croxton

And the fog rolls in.

You walk into a room with purpose, then all of a sudden you can’t remember why.

You’re in the middle of good rant and suddenly forget what you’re talking about.

Life is good, but you can’t help but feel depressed and unmotivated.

And those darn keys! It’s like they grow a set of legs when you’re not looking…

If you feel like your brain isn’t quite what it used to be, you’re probably right. Brain related disorders have become incredibly common. Unfortunately, both western and alternative medicine have completely missed the boat on the cause and cure for these issues, typically chalking them up to aging.

It’s not that simple.

While aging does in fact play a role in brain degeneration, there are plenty of other contributing factors that are not being addressed or even considered, including blood sugar problems, autoimmunity, stress, food intolerances, infections, neurotransmitter deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and more.

Last night on Underground Wellness Radio, Dr. Datis Kharrazian — author of the book Why Isn’t My Brain Working? — joined me for a fascinating discussion about the root cause(s) of brain fog, depression, anxiety, and other common brain problems. Plus, how to fix them!

The Podcast about Gluten-Free Lies, Leaky Gut, & JERFing. (#218)

sad-breadby Allyson the Assistant

As many of you know, Sean has been feeling a bit under the weather this week so I’m stepping in to share with you guys some awesome info from Dr. Peter Osborne’s show on UW Radio last week, The Gluten Free Lie.

May 18th will mark my 3-year anniversary working for Sean and let me tell you, since then, I’ve learned a TON about the evils of gluten.

But the coolest thing about working for Sean is that I’m always learning more. I know consuming gluten is linked to developing autoimmune disease, but listening to Dr. Osborne’s podcast really helped shed some light on the science behind it.

Simply put, ignoring a gluten sensitivity leads to leaky gut.

And leaky gut leads to autoimmune disease.

How can this happen?

The cells in the gut that line the intestine are tightly bound together to keep bacteria and toxins from the food we eat inside the GI tract, preventing them from getting into the bloodstream.

Gluten can cause the gut cells to open up and drift apart, allowing food proteins to slip between the cells. Since 80% of our immune systems resides in the lymphatic system behind the gut wall, the escaped food proteins start to cause an immune reaction.

Here’s the kicker – molecular mimicry.

Mindless Procreation 2: A Look in the Mirror

by Sean Croxton

Where do babies come from?

Ever since the books I read as a child led me to believe that I was delivered into this world dangling from the beak of a stork, I’ve been fascinated by that critical question. The idea of soaring through the sky wrapped in a tiny blanket to descend upon the outstretched arms of my jubilant mother and father on cloud nine left an indelible impression on my young mind. Made with love. Delivered by bird.

At some point, the birds and the bees took over for the stork. Exactly why sex and reproduction always had something to do with winged creatures still has me stumped. But eventually, the metaphors passed and the miracle of life turned real. There was no flying this time, just a whole lot of swimming. One lucky sperm penetrates a single egg, a union begetting new life on the horizon.

Conception to delivery was a complicated journey. Cells divided and differentiated; mitosis, meiosis, the stuff I learned in eighth grade science class and still don’t fully understand. It’s no wonder they made up that stork story. Reproduction can be rocket science.
