#227: Cows Save the Planet

Judith D. Schwartz

Guest: Judith D. Schwartz

You’re as healthy as the soil from which your food grows!

Judith D. Schwartz — journalist and author of Cows Save the Planet…and Other Improbable Ways of Restoring Soil to Heal the Earth — visits the show to discuss how we can take back the soil (and our health) by unmaking deserts, rethinking climate change, bringing back biodiversity, and restoring nutrients to our foods.

Topics include:

* Why the soil, fungi, and cows are missing links in the climate change debate.
* Why cows are NOT responsible for global warming.
* The truth about rising sea levels. It’s not just the melting icecaps…

The soil is devoid of so many minerals and vitamins. Another problem to be concerned about is the bees, bats and birds that do the pollinating. I just saw a huge list of foods we won’t have if the bees don’t start thriving again! What a horrible summer it will be without wonderful summer fruit. I hope you will share this list on your site and maybe do a show about it.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and ideas on farming and agriculture. I agree completely that Cows Save the Planet! The sooner we figure that out and stop vilifying crops/farm animals and realize everything works together the better.
We raise as many as 12 different crops on our place in addition to cattle. Amazingly the bees are doing extremely well in out area this year. Diverse healthy food systems are key. What works on one farm may not work for another. We are only here for a little while and we do the best we can to take care of it.
