Juiced: The Green Smoothie!

This was YUMMY!

Today, Melissa Henig aka The Raw Food Stylist stopped by the Underground Wellness kitchen to give me a lesson in juicing.

I must admit that I’m new to juicing. I’ve been meaning to buy a Vitamix for at least a year now, but just haven’t pulled the trigger. Probably because I’m not the biggest fan of veggies. Yes, I eat them. But I’d rather eat a thousand other foods before munching on kale.

After today’s session, I now understand why people are so into it. It actually makes the vegetables taste good! And it’s much easier to get them down the hatch when they’re served in a cup.

Check out today’s video. We filmed three today. Be on the lookout for Melissa’s Sun Dried Tomato Spaghetti and Detox Salad recipes coming up later on this week.

If you’d like to try The Green Smoothie recipe, here’s what you’ll need:

* handful of spinach
* handful of kale
* 1 banana
* 1/2 cup frozen mango
* 1 inch ginger
* 1 piece of lemon
* 1 apple
* 1 cup of ice
* 1 cup of water
* sweetener of choice….dates, figs, honey, maple

See you tomorrow! Gonna blog about cell phones. You’re not gonna believe this!

Friday Fun Day! A Double Dose of Nastiness!

Yoooooo!!

Before we get to today’s workout, I must say that last night’s radio show with Bruce Fife was an INSTANT CLASSIC.

I was amazed by how much we covered in a little over an hour. We chatted about:

* Why coconut oil has been stigmatized and synonymous with heart disease
* The soybean industry’s influence in creating the coconut oil fear
* How coconut oil may reverse Alzheimer’s
* Why cooking with “heart healthy” vegetable oils is NOT a good idea
* How vegetable oils can slow down your thyroid
* The connection between low-grade infections and heart disease
* How much coconut oil YOU should use every day
* And a whole bunch of other good stuff!

Listen HERE!

Thanks for all of your submitted questions and call-ins. Makes my job nice and easy!

TODAY, Josh Trent of Wellness Force made a return to Underground Wellness along with our new friend-in-fitness John Parker of FitLife TV.

The workout was BRUTAL! Almost tossed my cookies!

Here’s what we did.

Josh’s Workout

* Skiers – 30 seconds
* JUMPing Jacks with The Band – 30 seconds
* Indo Board Push Ups – 30 seconds (Buy YOUR Indo Board HERE!)
* Split Squat Plyos with a Twist – 30 seconds

Check out Josh’s advice on how to modify the workout and rest intervals to suit your own fitness level. It’s in the middle of the video.

John’s Workout
I had to go back through the footage to remember what we did. It was so traumatizing that my brain repressed the memory.

* Split Squat Jumps (again!) – 30 seconds (Get as HIGH as You Can!)
* Reverse Lunge with Knee Drive – 15 seconds on each side (Totally Suck)
* Rocker Push-Ups with a Plyo Push Up Finish – 20 seconds then bang out as may clappers as you can

You can do any of these movements at home or in your backyard. No gym needed! No excuses!

See you Monday!

Coconut Oil: Germ Warfare!

by Sean Croxton

It happened!

There is one particular day I look forward to each year and it went down yesterday.

I woke up, strolled to the kitchen, and found my jar of coconut oil smiling at me.

It was so beautiful, like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon to take its first flight. Like a wayward child coming home again.

It happened.

The coconut oil was liquid.

Summer is here.

Not only is the oil of all oils heart-healthy. Not only does it make your skin look dead sexy. Not only does it fight the bugs that attack your body, as we will discuss today.

Coconut oil makes one heck of a weather forecaster, too.

Yesterday brought blue skies with a high of 81 degrees in San Diego. And I didn’t need the weather girl to tell me that.

The coconut oil told me.

And best of all, I can drink it from the jar now. I take my coconut oil to the head! Spoons are for wussies.

Anyway, just thought I’d share in my summer excitement before dropping some knowledge bombs on you about coconut oil and your immunity. If you’re on the East Coast, you’ve got something to look forward to in the coming weeks. Leave your jar on the counter and tweet me when your butterfly hatches!

**********************************

Tonight, it’s on like Donkey Kong. Bruce Fife, author of The Coconut Oil Miracle is on the UW Radio Show. Certain to be another hot one. My coconut oil told me so.

Don’t miss it! 5pm PT/8pm ET

A major topic Bruce and I will be covering is the use of coconut oil as a means of fighting nasty bugs like bacteria, viruses, parasites, and yeast. One thing that dawned on me while reading his book is the well-known fact that traveling to tropical climates puts those of us from more moderate temperatures at risk of coming home with a bad case of the gut bugs.

I Heart Coconut Oil!

by Sean Croxton

It’s the coconut oil, baby!

Last year, I lubed up my head and face, got my keyboard all sticky, and posted one of the most infamous videos ever made on the benefits of coconut oil. I think I’ve gotten more email about coconut oil than just about any other topic I’ve vlogged about.

The video was so popular that one night I was standing in front of a gay nightclub in San Francisco (don’t ask!) and a man asked me, “Hey, aren’t you that coconut oil guy?”

Yeah, that’s me.

Typical coconut queries revolve around weight loss and its ability to boost metabolism. But there is so much more to it!

So, today I thought I’d pay homage by starting a series of blogs on the oil that I dare not live without. Even if you’re the most steadfast saturated fat phobe, I guarantee that after reading this series you’ll have at least one coconut-oil-stained shirt in no time.

I’ve got a bunch.

I’m thinking five blogs will be enough to do the job. Then we’ll cap it all off with next week’s UW Radio show (Thursday, April 28) with Bruce Fife, author of The Coconut Oil Miracle. Should be a pretty dope show!

We’ll start our series with a short discussion on heart disease. It seems as though every time I introduce coconut oil to friends and family, they go on and on about how it’s loaded with saturated fat and how it will crank up their cholesterol levels and make their hearts stop.

Where did this fear of the coconut originate? Well, let’s take a trip back in time.

This is Silly.

by Sean Croxton

Long time, no blog.

I wish I could tell you all about how busy I’ve been, but to be honest I’ve just been kinda chillin’. The radio show has been on a month-long hiatus (Robb Wolf this Thursday!). The “did you know” Facebook posts have taken a break. And I finally dusted off the Tweetdeck last night.

The TV show is in production. Just yesterday, my crew and I went over to Mark Sisson’s place and filmed our third episode. So far, we’ve shot with Gary Taubes, Todd Durkin, Dr. Tom O’Bryan, and Steve Cotter. You guys are going to LOVE the show!

What else is going on in Croxton World?

Well, I think I’m going through a phase that all health bloggers go through at some point or another. It’s the point at which we ask ourselves just what the heck else can we say about food that we haven’t said before. And how do we continue the discussion without losing the average Joes and Janes who just want to eat/live well and without attracting the neurotic orthorectics who turn food into a religion?
