The Podcast about Naked Doctors, Drug Money, and War Crimes. (# 217)

This was classic.

When I read Dr. Peter Glidden’s book The MD Emperor Has No Clothes a few months ago I knew it would make for an eye-opening show.

Dr. Glidden, a naturopathic doctor, doesn’t hold anything back. And he’s apparently not afraid to ruffle a few feathers.

While some may find his words controversial and unsettling, no one can question his passion for ensuring that everyone get the medical care they need — a type of care that addresses the root cause of symptoms and disease.

Click the player at the bottom of this post to listen to the entire episode.

Be sure to buckle up.

Here are my notes….

Your guests assumption that if a disease was caused by genetics it would have been selected out of the population is a missunderstanding of evolution. Evolutionary preasure is only placed on those defects that prevent someone from reproducing. So if a disease shows up later in life or does not prevent reproduction (ie death) it will not be selected out of the population. So for example a genetic mutation that predisposes you to colon cancer later in life does not prevent you from reproducing in your 20’s and thus is passed on to your kids. There is no evolutionary preseasure to weed out this genetic mutation. Also genetic mutations happen all the time it is how evolution works. Most genetic defects are generally nuetral and some are benificial. These get passed on along with those that show up later in life. If enivronmental conditions change and a mutation suddenly confers even a small reproductive advantage it will become more common in the population, this change is evolution at work. Enough changes through mutation and you get new species.
