Were Our Ancestors Starch Eaters?

December 12th, 2012

by Sean Croxton

To starch or not to starch.

With so much emphasis these days on Paleo, low-carb, and low-glycemic, confusion abound over the role of starch in the human diet.

I prefer to keep it simple and recommend that we eat like our ancestors.

But were our ancestors starch eaters?

Last week’s UW Radio guest Paul Jaminet seems to think so. And in the latest edition of his book Perfect Health Diet he outlines the scientific evidence supporting this premise, including…

* isotope signatures of fossilized bone
* the structure of hominid teeth
* the diets of modern hunter-gatherers
* genetics

Check out this quick clip from our show to hear Paul explain how our ancestors lived in open grasslands, and what it had to do with their starch consumption.

Paleo Summit News: Day 3 – Evolutionary Evidence, Gluten Sensitivity, & Debunking the Paleo Diet!

February 28th, 2012

by Sean Croxton

This very well may be my favorite day of the summit.

Why?

Because I love Paul Jaminet, am totally fascinated with how gluten can affect more than just your gut, and because I didn’t want to make this summit a total Paleo Love Fest.

Disagreement can be a good thing. It’s how we learn from each other.

In Room 3, Matt Stone presents on why he thinks the Paleo Diet is a giant FAIL for a lot of people. According to Matt, Paleo is a short-term fix that may lead to adrenal problems, lowered metabolism, reduced libido, anxiety, and more.

Can Matt sway your opinion of Paleo? View his presentation RIGHT HERE!

Room 2 is where you’ll find my own personal favorite summit presentation by Dr. Tom O’Bryan.

The most basic Paleo recommendation is to avoid gluten. However, there are a lot of people who have gluten sensitivity with no digestive symptoms at all! Dr. O’Bryan connects the dots linking gluten consumption, autoimmune disease, muscle pain, and bone loss. This one is sure to blow your mind!

View Dr. O’Bryan’s presentation HERE!

In Room 1, Paul Jaminet outlines his 5 lines of evolutionary evidence for the optimal human diet. Paul’s evidence includes:

* The diet of Paleolithic humans as well as more recent hunter-gatherers
* The diet of mammals
* The composition of human breast milk
* The composition of the human body
* The food reward sytem

Paul is mad smart!! Be sure to take notes.

Watch Paul’s presentation HERE!

And like I said, disagreement can be a good thing. Tomorrow, Nora Gedgaudas cross-examines Paul’s evolutionary evidence, sharing what she agrees and disagrees with.

This Paleo Summit is getting interesting!

Hope you guys are loving it as much as I am.
