Top 4 Personal Care Ingredients to Avoid!

February 27th, 2013

PersonalCareProductsToxic_thumbby Sean Croxton

Think about this for a second.

If you’re a man and your doctor finds that you have low levels of testosterone, what would your doc prescribe?

Probably some kind of testosterone gel or cream.

(By the way, the above prescription completely ignores the reason WHY your testosterone is low in the first place. But that’s a blog for another day.)

Or let’s say you’re a smoker who really wants to kick the habit. What would you go out and buy?

Probably a nicotine patch of some kind, right?

What these two examples have in common is that by applying a substance to the skin, it is delivered transdermally to the bloodstream in just a matter of seconds.

What we put onto our bodies gets into our bodies.

But what about the personal care products we use every day — the soaps, shampoos, deodorants, cosmetics, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and lotions?

Do their chemical contents have a similar fate, with their foaming and wetting agents, synthetic fragrances, and antifreeze-like compounds eventually pumping through our veins?

Darn right they do.

According to the Environmental Working Group, the typical consumer uses an average of nine personal care products containing 126 separate ingredients every day. At least one-third of these ingredients have been identified as causing cancer or other serious health conditions. (Fitzgerald, 23)

That’s not good.

In my opinion, the toxic chemicals we habitually use in the name of hygiene, beauty, scent, and spotless homes are the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about.

There aren’t many parents out there willing to own up to the fact that their children may be going through early puberty due to the estrogen-mimicking chemicals in their shampoo.

Not many women want to confront the fact that the parabens in their makeup may be the cause of their hormonal imbalances.

I can empathize. Reading and understanding food labels is hard enough. Making sense out of the multi-syllabic ingredients in your body wash only makes life more complicated, I know.

So today, my good friend Christa Orecchio of The Whole Journey is here to get you moving in the right direction, as she explains WHY you should avoid these four common personal care ingredients:

* Parabens
* DEA
* Sodium laureth sulfate
* Propylene glycol

Because you probably don’t want to brush your teeth with garage floor cleaner, ya know. :)

We also show you a ton of healthy, natural products you can replace the toxic stuff with. Even toilet paper!

WATCH the video below.

Be sure to check out the Skin Deep website, where you can find out on a scale of 1-10 just how toxic (or safe) your personal care products are.

Would You Like Toxins with Your Turkey?

November 15th, 2012

by Sean Croxton

This one blew me away.

I was taking David Getoff’s holistic health class back in 2008.

The topic of the day was toxins. We covered chlorine and fluoride in the water, mercury in dental amalgams, and eventually landed on cookware.

Personally, it had never even crossed my mind that my Teflon-coated, non-stick cookware was a problem.

David went on to explain that the chemicals in this type of cookware can off-gas, and can also leach these toxic chemicals into the food being cooked.

But that’s not what blew me away.

What blew me away is that Teflon chemicals have been known to kill birds. Yikes!

According to this article by the Environmental Working Group…

“Bird enthusiasts and veterinarians have known for decades that Teflon-coated and other non-stick cookware, if heated to high temperatures, is acutely toxic to birds. The peer-reviewed literature contains numerous reports of bird deaths linked to the use of Teflon and other non-stick pans and appliances in the home, beginning about 30 years ago.”

If Teflon kills birds, I wonder what it’s doing to humans?

According to Randall Fitzgerald in his book The Hundred Year Lie (one of my faves), ninety-percent of Americans have Teflon residue in their blood. One of these chemicals called C8 has been linked to a wide array of birth defects and developmental problems (from Edward Emmett, University of Pennsylvania research, August 2005).

When I learned of this information, I made it a point to invest in non-toxic, stainless steel cookware.

Because what’s the point of buying toxin-free, organic food when I’m just gonna cook it with toxic cookware?

Makes no sense.

So a few years ago, I picked up a Nutri-Stahl cookware set from my main man Guy Herald. Guy’s cookware has been endorsed by…

* The Gerson Cancer Institute
* The Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation
* David Getoff, of course.
* Me!

For the second year in a row, Guy and I have a special offer for you.

Today, you can get your hands on a 22-piece Nutri-Stahl cookware set — the same one I have — for the super, duper low price of just $399 plus tax and shipping.

Click HERE to see all 22 pieces.

You can also watch the cookware in action HERE.

This is a steal. This same set will run you at least a grand from any other distributor or showroom floor.

In fact, a couple years ago the cookware community ganged up on me and Guy about a video we shot about his cookware.They were angry about the low price Guy mentioned in the video. I had to take it down and edit the price out.

Due to this pricing fiasco, Guy does not take orders online. You must call him directly or drop him an email.

To order, dial 1-760-505-7057 or send an email to [cookworld4u at aol dot com]

This set is perfect for the holiday season. You can treat your family to a toxin-free Thanksgiving dinner. It also makes a fantastic gift.

Last year, I gave a set to my sis-in-law. I couldn’t stand seeing my nieces and nephew eat Teflon every day.

This offer ends next Monday the 19th at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

UPDATE: This sale has been extended through Monday, November 26th.

East Coasters — to receive your set by Turkey Day, place your order ASAP.

Call Guy at 1-760-505-7057.

Tell him I sent you.

Happy Thursday, friends!

Are Chemicals Making You Fat?

December 23rd, 2011

by Sean Croxton

There’s a lot more to fat loss than meets the eye.

I’ve sat through many conferences, read hundreds of books, and spoken with countless experts about the causes of and potential solutions for our modern obesity epidemic.

Everyone has their own opinion. Some make sense. Others are overly simplistic — take the calories-in/calories-out fat loss formula, for instance. And most completely miss the point by approaching the topic with extreme tunnel vision.

In my opinion, solving problems usually calls for some lateral thinking, or what I call thinking outside of The Box. In other words, getting to the bottom of obesity requires that the conversation move beyond just diet and exercise alone.

This conversation can go in many directions. We could talk about the effects of sleep deprivation on weight gain, the role of stress in blood sugar dysregulation, or even how infections contribute to insulin resistance and thus fat storage.

But one leading cause of obesity that often gets lost in this ongoing discussion is how the abundance of toxic chemicals in our air, food, water, and even those lurking in your kitchen and bathroom cabinets are making you fat.

It is blatantly obvious that obesity has steadily risen as our food supply has become more processed and refined. I think we can all agree on that. Yet during this same period the number of chemicals in our environment has exploded in lock-step with our waistlines. For instance, in his fascinating-yet-kinda-scary book The Hundred Year Lie, author Randall Fitzgerald states that in a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control involving 2,400 adults and children, more than two hundred synthetic chemical toxins were found in the subjects’ bodies, with a hundred more chemicals suspected to be present.

The human body was never intended to deal with this kind of chemical assault. In fact, when you think about it, your body is a highly complex machine within which literally thousands of biochemical reactions are taking place at all times. If you’ve ever taken a laboratory course in Chemistry, you know that mixing random chemicals together can be a bad idea. You never know what you’re gonna get!

According to a growing number of research scientists studying obesogens, the chemicals we inhale, eat, drink, and lather ourselves with during and after a shower are making us fat.

When it comes to fat regulation, it’s all about the hormones. Obesogens are chemicals that negatively impact the hormonal system thus triggering weight gain. At times, they are referred to as endocrine disruptors. A common example of an endocrine-disrupting chemical is a plastic bottle that leaches estrogen-mimicking substances into the body. An elevation in estrogen will certainly create the conditions for fat storage, especially in men.

But it doesn’t end with plastics — not even close. Other chemicals with obesegenic effects include bisphenol A (BPA), non-stick (Teflon) coating on cookware, the petrochemicals in common personal care products, and many more.

Bisphenol A (BPA)

BPA can be found in hard, clear plastic containers, on sales receipts, and in the linings of canned goods. It has recently found itself in the news, as research has demonstrated links between BPA and learning disabilities, cancers, and leptin resistance -— the latter being a significant factor in weight gain.

BPA also suppresses the release of adiponectin, a hormone responsible for increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing inflammation. Inhibiting adiponectin contributes to insulin resistance, which, of course, leads to fat storage. As a general rule, when insulin levels are elevated, the body is in fat storage mode.

To minimize BPA exposure be sure that you purchase canned goods that are BPA-free, avoid bottles or containers marked with a number 7, and have the cashier toss the receipt when you don’t need it.

Teflon (PFOA)

Teflon, or PFOA, is commonly found in non-stick cookware, greaseproof food wrappers, waterproofers, and popcorn bags. Research by the Environmental Working Group has found that over 90% of us have PFOA in our bloodstreams. Studies have also found high levels in umbilical cord blood. Yikes!

This chemical has been linked to various cancers, lung and kidney damage, and obesity. If you are cooking your food in non-stick cookware, you are slowly poisoning yourself daily with small amounts of PFOA. Keep this is mind if you are one those people who eats healthy but also eats out a lot. The restaurant chef is most likely using non-stick cookware!

Avoiding PFOA is a matter of investing in a set of cast iron or stainless steel cookware. If making such an investment is not in the cards for your right now, be sure to get rid of any scratched of chipped non-stick items, as they can tremendously increase the amount of PFOA in your food.

Personal Care Products

According to Fitzgerald, we use 9 personal care products daily with around 126 chemical ingredients, one-third of which have been identified as causing cancer or other serious health problems. Ouch!

Just as we should read our food labels, we should also pay mind to the chemicals in these products. No, we don’t eat or drink our shampoo or body wash (at least I hope not), but we must not forget that what we rub on our skin can be absorbed transdermally into our bloodstreams.

Toxic ingredients to be on the lookout for are propylene glycol, methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, and fragrances (because your kiwi shampoo doesn’t really have kiwi in it). These chemicals can have an estrogen mimicking effect, thus shifting hormones, storing fat, and possibly fueling tumor growth.

I encourage you to visit www.cosmeticsdatabase.com to learn just how toxic your personal care products may be. The database ranks products on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most toxic. I try to keep my products at four and below. Great brands are Aubrey Organic, J/A/S/O/N, and Alba Organics.

We’re just scratching the obesogenic surface! Additional fat-storing toxins include vinyl, most cleaning products, fire retardants (they’re everywhere), chemicals in our water supply, and more.

I cover many of these environmental toxins, how to remove them, and what to replace them with in chapter 9 of my e-book The Dark Side of Fat Loss. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Of course, none of us can live in a bubble. But what we can do is educate ourselves, become more aware of the toxins around us, and replace them with healthier options.

The next time you’re out buying a new bottle of shampoo, skip your usual toxic brand and grab its non-toxic alternative. Or invest in just one stainless steel skillet; you don’t have to buy the whole set!

Remember, a little on top of a little will soon become a lot. By making small changes today, in a matter of months you will have tremendously reduced your toxic load. Not only will feel better and live longer, but you will also burn more fat by normalizing your hormonal system.

Burning fat by eliminating toxins…

Now that’s thinking outside of The Box!

Fluoride is Good for You!

December 16th, 2011

by Will and Susan Revak

Thanks to Seanʼs work, a lot of attention is given to the quality of food we eat, what types of food nourish us best, and above all how to use the toilet for the ultimate elimination! :)

When we talk about food, Sean helps us see why we want to eat natural, organic, ʻreal foodʼ and certainly choose foods free of toxic ingredients. Doesnʼt it seem appropriate to give a similar amount of consideration to the oral hygiene products we use on a daily basis?

We believe that to create optimal health and wellness we have to hold the same standard for our personal hygiene products as we do for the foods we eat to nourish our bodies.

But why do we need to put the same consideration to our oral hygiene products as we do for the foods we eat? After all, we arenʼt eating our toothpaste, right? I will let Dean Vafiadis, DDS, president and founder of the New York Smile Institute answer this question…

“Most of what you put in your mouth goes into your bloodstream, even if you don’t swallow it.” Dean Vafiadis, D.D.S.

In fact, some chemicals enter your system faster through the mouth than by the usual stomach route.

So, at this point, letʼs turn our attention and take a look at the main controversial ingredient in oral hygiene products, fluoride.

While there are valid points on each side of the fluoride argument, we have found the main difference is how broad of a perspective each side takes when viewing the subject. Those in favor of using fluoride in the mouth are looking from the viewpoint that goes something like this, “applying fluoride on the teeth helps to reduce tooth decay so we should use it”. Those not in favor of using fluoride take a broader, more holistic view. This more general approach questions whether the benefits of using fluoride on the teeth are greater than the risks of fluoride on the health of the whole body. Since our company produces organic toothpaste alternatives, you can guess where we stand on this argument.

It would be different if using fluoride was the ONLY way to achieve greater oral health. Then we may have to weigh more closely whether the benefits of using fluoride was more important than the risks. But, there are plenty of ways to create greater oral health without using fluoride.

So, hereʼs our major concern about fluoride exposure…

Fluoride displaces iodine in the body.

There it is. Did you miss it? Doesnʼt sound like a big deal, does it?

While that doesnʼt sound so terrible, hereʼs my case for fluoride poisoning from toothpaste (and water fluoridation) being a driving cause for subclinical hypothyroidism which has direct links to all of the major modern diseases we find in our global culture.

Here is how fluoride is good for you (aka how fluoride can help you achieve your goals)…

If you want to be fat…

The thyroid gland regulates metabolism among other functions. That means that if the thyroid gland is under active, not only does our ability to burn fat diminish, our desire to even get off the couch to workout plummets too!

Our metabolic function is like the fire in every cell that keeps it moving well, kind of like the level where you car idles when at a stop light. This fire needs to be running at the right speed in order for us to live a healthy life.

If you want to be tired all day…

You see, fluorine is a halogen, chemically related to iodine, but much more active. As such, fluoride out-competes and displaces iodine at the receptor sites on the thyroid gland which respond to the thyroid stimulating hormone; so that less of this hormone reaches the thyroid gland and so less thyroid hormone is manufactured.

When the thyroid slows, so does the whole metabolism. So we find that we feel tired, and just to make it through the day find ourselves reaching for adrenal stimulants like coffee, sugar or (God forbid) Red Bull or you fill in the blank for your adrenal robber of choice.

If you want to diminish your sex drive…

Be sure to have small doses of fluoride daily. You see, a little goes a LONG way when it comes to the iodine displacing function of fluoride in the body. Donʼt worry if you arenʼt getting enough fluoride, your body doesnʼt really eliminate it very quickly so we store it up over time…

Making sure you have plenty of fluoride will ensure that you wonʼt feel like doing anything but crash when you go to bed!

If you want to be cold all the time…

Low body temperature is the easiest way to determine how well your thyroid is functioning. Here is an easy way to see where you are at with your body temp. Take your temperature first thing in the morning. Plan by bringing your thermometer with you when you go to bed and shake it down before going to bed. That way you can test your temp before you even get up to go to the bathroom in the morning. Even getting up and walking to the bath will raise your base body temp a bit. So, itʼs best to test while you are still laying in bed.

You may be surprised to find out that you arenʼt the temp we all learned when we were kids! What temp is a human? 98.6 F or 37 C. While not perfect, finding your temp below 97 is a good indicator of low thyroid function. (note here, women on their cycle should wait to test when not menstruating.)

If you want to increase your risk of all types of cancer…

Cancer thrives in a system with an under active thyroid. Cancer grows very well in a body whose fire isnʼt running at optimal function. It makes sense given that an under active, sluggish metabolism wonʼt flush toxins as well, so the toxins build up in the body. A body with low thyroid function generally becomes less efficient at processing fuel, removing toxins, and the whole system downshifts to a slow grind.

Some experts in the field of alternative, natural cancer treatments use inducing a fever in the body to fight the cancer and help restore health to the patient. You see, cancerous cells donʼt do well in a well burning, fully functioning metabolism.

How to Filter Your Shower Water!

December 14th, 2011

by Sean Croxton

I’m pretty pumped up about tomorrow. It almost feels like Christmas.

Tomorrow morning, I will be uploading the fourth episode of The Underground Wellness TV Show to the YouTube channel.

My guest is Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist and traditional naturopath David Getoff.

This particular episode is ALL about water. David and I cover chlorine, fluoride, and all of the other harmful toxins that may be lingering in your water supply and toxifying your body. And, of course, we also cover (at length, in fact) exactly how you can safely remove these toxins from your water.

In the video below I share with you a couple of my favorite safe water products. First, I cover my trusty shower filter.

Did you know that taking a 15-minute shower in chlorinated water is like drinking eight cups of it? Craziness!

Then, I get into my fabulous glass water bottle — because I like my water to be estrogen-free.

I guess we can call tomorrow David Getoff Day.

Stop by here in the morning for our TV show. It’s a really mind blower.

By the way, Brett Klika is my second guest. He puts me through another one of his extremely creative workouts.

Then tune in to tomorrow night’s UW Radio show. It’s Ask David Getoff! You can call in and ask David anything you want about your health and wellness. The man is a genius!

The radio show goes down LIVE at 5pm PST/8pm EST. Click HERE to listen by internet. Or dial 347.237.5608 to ask David a question on the air.

If you’re a bit shy about calling in, post your question on the UW Facebook Page.

Enjoy today’s vid!

I’m out.
