O.M.G.

Yesterday, Allyson the Assistant and I laughed our butts off as we poured through the 70-plus #JERFing contest pics submitted by real foodies from around the world.

There were so many awesome, creative pics to choose from. Narrowing them down to a Top Ten was NOT easy.

But it sure was fun.

Actually, due to a few last minute entries we ended up with a Top Twelve.

Before I announce the finalists, I want to thank everyone who took the time to represent your JERF. Your enthusiasm has been amazing! Loved seeing all of the kids getting involved. Very inspiring.

If you didn’t make the cut, we’ll be running a similar contest in a couple of months, as we approach the launch of The Sexy Back Summit.

Hint: JERFing is sexy! (No kids, please.)

Without further ado, announcing the JERF12….

The Art of Bone Broth.

January 29th, 2013

bb_bannerby Sean Croxton

You asked for this.

Back in October, my main man and favorite real food chef Lance Roll was my guest on UW Radio. We spoke about all things bone broth — the benefits, the science, and the preparation.

Since that show, Chef Lance has been swamped with emails from listeners asking if he ships his broth to locations outside of San Diego. Unfortunately, due to logistical issues — such as the broth thawing while en route — shipping was not an option at the time.

But I’ve got good news for you. The chef got it all figured out and is now shipping directly to your doorstep!

Last month Lance stopped by my place, where we filmed the video below showing you exactly what to do with your broth when it arrives. He also shows you a few ways to add a little extra flavor and nutrition to what he calls “the magical elixir”.

To order your own batch of broth, head over to www.thebrothery.com.

Enjoy the video! If you missed our radio broadcast, click the mini-player below the video.

Top 3 Tips for Reducing Cravings and Boosting Mood!

January 28th, 2013

Royalty-Free Stock Photography by RubberballBy Kusha Karvandi, Founder & CEO of Exerscribe.com

We’ve all been there.

A long stressful day at work, and we failed to plan our meals accordingly.

Or worse, we exert the time and energy to prepare our food, but office calamity and eponymous ‘fire-fighting’ steal the wind from our sails. So, in turn, our blood sugar turns into a turbulent roller coaster leaving us lethargic, ravenous and ultimately capitulated by comfort food.

But why do we reach for comfort food?

There are three elements which drive us toward the bad stuff: low serotonin, poor gut flora, and imbalanced hormones. And here are three tips for improving them.

Boost Serotonin

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which is responsible for maintaining our Circadian Rhythm (natural sleep cycles), memory, and boosting mood. Our brain, just like our muscles, consumes blood sugar to function and produce serotonin. So, when blood sugar drops, so do our serotonin levels.

For the sake of efficiency, our body seeks what it knows to be the quickest source of energy to spike serotonin levels: comfort food. The reason being, comfort food is generally composed of processed, refined carbohydrates and/or simple sugars which are guaranteed to give an instant jolt in blood sugar. The problem with this is that not only does this add inches to your waistline by signaling body fat storage, but the brain also recognizes this pattern and begins to crave these substances when your blood sugar crashes.

The solution: retrain your brain by eliminating tempting junk food and replacing it with unprocessed, whole foods. A diet higher in quality animal fats (i.e. raw unpasteurized cow’s whole milk, organic whole eggs, etc) will keep your blood sugar stable and optimize fat-burning hormones. Be sure to limit caffeine intake, as well. Caffeine desensitizes key serotonin receptors in the brain, reducing the efficacy of your healthy eating efforts. Also, try supplementing with amino acids such as L-Tryptophan or 5-HTP, which are precursors to serotonin. Take 500-1,000mg 1-3 times per day for optimal results.

Restore Gut Flora

As mentioned above, comfort foods are typically composed of processed sugars and starches – enemies of gut flora. When we ingest these foods, the development of Candida overgrowth occurs in the intestines. Since the intestines are where we absorb vitamins and nutrients, it is essential to keep them in good health by fostering the growth of good bacteria.

Fermented foods with live cultures, such as kefir, natural sauerkraut, kombucha tea, and yogurt can help harvest good bacteria. Also, refrigerated probiotic supplements such as Jarro-Dophilus are an effective way to immediately promote gut health by delivering 6 or more beneficial probiotic strains in easy-to-swallow capsules. Start with the lowest dosage and work your way up as needed. When your gut is in optimal health, your body has an easier time stabilizing blood sugar. This equates to an elevated mood, and better eating decisions in the long-run.

Balance Your Hormones

When our hormones are in balance and optimized, our body becomes a fat-burning, muscle-building machine. Not to mention, our overall sense of well-being relies on this. However, when that balance is compromised by poor eating habits, our hormones work against us.

A diet high in processed, nutrient-shallow carbohydrates will leave our glands depleted and incapable of proper function. Our body needs saturated fats, such as high-quality animal fats, to provide our glands with the essential vitamins, minerals, and environment for production of hormones.

The additional problem is, of course, that so much of what we love to eat is also too high in omega-6 fatty acids. Packaged goods and unnatural vegetable oils (such as canola oil), provide a high concentration of omega-6 fatty acids, but our bodies necessitate a balance between omega-3, -6, and -9 for proper brain and hormone function. Eating a serving of fish (such as wild Alaskan salmon, mackerel, wild herring, sardines, etc) 3-5 times per week can provide a good dose of omega-3 fatty acids to get your body back in balance. Also, try supplementing with Butter Oil and Cod Liver Oil. Butter Oil delivers a high concentrated dose of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals, and Cod Liver Oil provides highly bio-available Vitamin-D and omega-3 fatty acids.

The suggestions provided will hopefully help you make better eating decisions, regularly. I’m not advocating you eliminate comfort foods completely, but the goal should be to eat whole foods and high quality fats to keep your brain happy, your stomach satisfied, and your day manageable.

Were Our Ancestors Starch Eaters?

December 12th, 2012

by Sean Croxton

To starch or not to starch.

With so much emphasis these days on Paleo, low-carb, and low-glycemic, confusion abound over the role of starch in the human diet.

I prefer to keep it simple and recommend that we eat like our ancestors.

But were our ancestors starch eaters?

Last week’s UW Radio guest Paul Jaminet seems to think so. And in the latest edition of his book Perfect Health Diet he outlines the scientific evidence supporting this premise, including…

* isotope signatures of fossilized bone
* the structure of hominid teeth
* the diets of modern hunter-gatherers
* genetics

Check out this quick clip from our show to hear Paul explain how our ancestors lived in open grasslands, and what it had to do with their starch consumption.

Lessons from the No on Prop 37 Vote.

November 7th, 2012

by Sean Croxton

We gave it a shot.

For over a year, hundreds — if not thousands — of brave, passionate organizers and volunteers stepped into the ring with Goliath.

They gathered the requisite signatures, secured a spot on the ballot, and spread the word to any voter who would listen.

Then last night, with our collective fingers and toes crossed, we waited, hoping that a majority of Californians valued their right to know.

They didn’t.

Apparently 55% of my State’s populace doesn’t mind being part of our nationwide food experiment.

The people have spoken. And this time they chose to consume genetically-modified foods.

Congratulations, Goliath.

I can’t say that I was surprised by the result. Certainly disappointed, but not surprised.

The day I saw my first No on Prop 37 television commercial, I knew we were in trouble. The commercial claimed that a Yes vote would increase food prices, that the argument against GM foods was unscientific, that just about every newspaper in the State had endorsed a No vote.

Not once did I a see a pro-37 commercial to counter the above claims. Then again, I don’t watch a whole lot of TV.

Commercials cost money, and Goliath has deep pockets.

According to this SF Gate article

“Opponents (of Prop 37), raising more than $45 million, had the backing of large agribusiness and chemical companies such as Monsanto and Dow, and food manufacturer giants, including PepsiCo. The Yes campaign raised about $6.7 million and was supported largely by the organic industry, consumer groups and alternative medicine organizations.”

Money talks. Organic cow dung walks.

While $6.7 million bucks is no small sum, Goliath can find likely find that number hidden between his oversized couch cushions. And that’s what I really want to talk about here.

A couple of months ago, while being interviewed for an online magazine, I was asked what it’s going to take to make a significant impact in how our country views food and health. My answer…

Money.

I imagine he was expecting me to say something more hippy-ish, like “we all need to come together and spread the word to the people”. Or something like that.

While I love the idea of grassroots movements, I am equally endeared with greenback support. Because let’s be honest, just one of those No on 37 commercials likely reached more people in thirty seconds than my blogs, podcasts, and videos reached all year.

And although I can understand it (because I’ve been there), the rampant poverty complex going on within our alternative health movement has to stop.

Imagine what kind of impact we would make if just a hundred of the many thousands of real food bloggers, podcasters, speakers, and consultants turned their passions into thriving six-, seven-, or eight-figure businesses. Not by scamming people out of their money, but through serving others by adding value to their lives.

I won’t hide it. My goal is to be filthy rich. I want to be the Shawn Carter (a.k.a. Jay-Z) of the health game. While Mr. Carter gets paid to make your head bob, I have no problem making your heart healthy and skinny jeans fit for a fee.

The business model is the same. My products are my albums. The blogs, podcasts, and videos are my free mix-tapes.

It’s the law of fair exchange — payment is due when products and/or services are rendered.

Bloggers, if you live in fear of your readers and followers leaving you because you asked to be paid, then you’re breaking that law.

They can call you a sellout (been there), or write you nasty emails about how health information should be free (done that), or post smear videos about you on YouTube (there now).

They’ll call you every name in the book. But you’ll also be the one called upon when a worthy cause — like labeling GMOs — needs your financial support.

How cool would it be if a hundred bloggers (at least) could each write substantial checks made out to the Non-GMO project? How much TV time would that buy? How many people would it educate?

It’s time to stop playing small. Time to stop trying to make everyone happy.

Bill Cosby once said, “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”

Word.

Go to iTunes and read the reviews for Jay-Z’s albums. They’re not all positive — not even close. However, by using his finances to help bring basketball to Brooklyn, he has brought a ton of positivity and spirit to the borough and its businesses.

That’s what I call IMPACT. Sometimes it doesn’t come on the cheap.

If we truly want to beat Goliath, we can’t show up with a slingshot. We must level the battlefield.

I long for the day when…

I see a Joel Salatin commercial while watching The Voice.

Kim and Kloey rock JERF t-shirts.

Dr. Dre says “Kale Yeeeah!”.

And if those don’t get the nation’s attention, I’m not opposed to running ads with hot girls posing all naughty with organic carrots and cucumbers.

Whatever works. :)

With each defeat there is a lesson to be learned. The defeat of Prop 37 has taught me that the next time around I need to do MORE. I played too small. I didn’t use my connections, voice, and online platforms as effectively as I could have and should have.

I’ll take responsibility for that. There’s no one to blame but myself.

But next time a cause this important comes around — whether in California or elsewhere — I pledge to put my money where my mouth is. And it is my greatest hope that my Real Health counterparts will have the means to do the same.

We need more summits. More ebooks. More webinars. More e-courses. More live conferences.

More courage.

Mo’ money. There’s no way around it, peeps.

Next time, Goliath goes down.

Juicing Vegetables: Healthy or Hype?

November 2nd, 2012

by Sean Croxton

What an amazing week it was!

We finally got back to our roots, making some killer online video on YouTube.

We broadcasted TWO episodes of UW Radio with guests Drew Canole and JJ Virgin.

We gave away almost 2000 free copies of JJ’s new book The Virgin Diet.

Over 1800 Just Eat Real Foodies joined the new JERFing community of Facebook.

And I celebrated my 35th birthday with an easy Chocolate Coconut Cookie recipe. It doesn’t get much better than that.

So to close out this week of UW awesomeness, I’ll leave you with a video I shot with juicing expert Drew Canole.

In my 4 years of hosting UW Radio, I had never received so many email/Facebook questions for a single guest — there were actually too many to ask Drew on the air! So I asked him to stop by the studio for a Q&A session to answer some of the questions we didn’t get to on the show.

Drew’s appearance on UW Radio was the second most listened to show ever — second only to the episode with Paul Chek and Joel Salatin.

We covered topics like blending versus juicing, potential problems with plant toxins, how juicing improves digestion, and the best juicers YOU can use at home.

Drew even went Oprah on us, giving away a juicer to one of our callers!

Click the player below to listen to the ENTIRE SHOW.

Listen to internet radio with Underground Wellness on Blog Talk Radio

I’ll be sure to have Drew back on the show really soon. I plan on filming a set of vegetable juicing videos in the next couple weeks. You’re gonna dig ‘em.

If you’re looking for some juicing recipes to make yourself, check out Drew’s Juice Up Your Life system.

Enjoy!
